When I was 24 years old, I was raising my son while earning $5.25 an hour as a gas station cashier in Prince William County. Every paycheck was spoken for before it arrived. There were times when my family had to choose between putting food on the table and paying utility bills. There were times when the lights were cut off because there simply wasn’t enough money to cover everything. Those experiences taught me that affordability isn’t an abstract policy discussion. For working families, it’s about whether they can stay in their homes, keep the lights on and create opportunities for their children. My story is not about hardship. It’s about opportunity. Virginia allowed me to build a career, support my family and serve my community. That’s why I believe major economic and energy decisions should be judged by a simple question: Will they help Virginia families get ahead? That is how I view the proposed merger between Dominion Energy and NextEra Energy. While this proposal deserves careful scrutiny, it also presents potential opportunities for Virginia consumers, workers, businesses and communities.
