Cinco de Mayo – the commemoration of the 1862 upset victory by ill-equipped Mexican troops defeated a much stronger French army in Puebla – is not a Mexican national holiday but it remains a big deal north of the border.
That is why Central Valley communities like Dinuba will celebrate with a May 4 parade that will be reigned over by Dinuba Cinco de Mayo Queen Andrea Parra-López.
The Tulare County city of 25,000, of which almost 90% are Latino, is rare in that it holds a pageant and a parade to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
Saturday’s parade, which will be led by grand marshal Pastor Mark Romero, who founded Campus Life. Queen Andrea Parra-López and her court, including first runner-up Ashley Hernández-Tapia and second runner-up Elizabeth Quintero-Rubio will also participate in the parade.
The pageant, which began in 1997, is sponsored by Leadership Northern Tulare County.
The parade starts at 10 a.m. in downtown Dinuba, and ends at Rose Ann Vuich Park where carnival rides, games, entertainment and food are on the schedule.
The carnival rides from Thursday through Sunday; entertainment is scheduled Friday and Saturday.
Lucha y Más: Cinco de Mayo weekend at River Park
Fresno Street Eats, River Park and BarrelHouse are throwing the biggest Cinco De Mayo weekend party in town with Lucha Y Más , a full day of lucha Xtreme wrestling, live music from Mariachi Tenochtitlán and the Roosevelt High Mariachis and cumbia music, food trucks, beer garden, and shopping.

Clovis Taco & Taps Trail: Cinco de Mayo weekend
The Clovis Taco & Taps trail is a full-day experience that highlights the Central Valley’s taco trucks and Clovis’ blossoming brewing community. There will be a trolley car and buses connecting from brewery to brewery that people can ride for free. People can also hop on the trail with their bike or just walk.

Tioga-Sequoia Beer Garden is throwing a Cinco de Mayo fiesta May 5, with Cumbia Bass bringing the vibes from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Micheladas, beer slushies and food with Fresno Street Eats.

Fresno Rainbow Pride: Cinco de Mayo fundraising dinner
Fresno Rainbow Pride’s annual Cinco De Mayo Fundraising Dinner is back at Tacos Marquitos. People can enjoy a sit-down dinner or purchase a to-go meal. Plate includes two tacos, rice and beans. Vegetarian options are available. Drinks sold separately. People can stay and enjoy a pop-up drag show every 15 to 30 minutes. There will be new Fresno Rainbow Pride merchandise. Free parking on-site. Purchasing a meal ticket in advance is highly encouraged.

Orange Cove’s Cinco de Mayo event with parade
Orange Cove’s Cinco de Mayo event includes a parade kicking off at noon at J.O. Eaton Memorial Park on 6th Street. Residents can watch the parade and participate in other festivities later that afternoon that includes pony and train rides for children, food, and a beer garden for adults as well as live entertainment with DJ Toeknee performing from noon to 1 p.m., folkloric dancers from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and local music group Balazzo to perform from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The Tulare Kings Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Chamber Foundation of Tulare and Kings Counties are hosting its annual Cinco de Mayo festival in downtown Visalia on Church Street between Main and Center from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. with live music with Mezcal band.
