Two pedestrians were killed early Tuesday in two separate incidents that happened less than 30 minutes apart.

Officers responded just after midnight to Polk Avenue north of Gettysburg Avenue and found a man in the middle of road.

The man, described as being in his 40s, was transported to Community Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead by an ER doctor, police said.

A bicycle was found at the scene, but it was undamaged. Police believe the man was walking when he was struck.

Lt. Leslie Williams said it appears the pedestrian and the vehicle were both traveling north on Polk at the time of the collision.

The vehicle that was involved left the scene, Williams said. The road was closed for a few hours while detectives investigated the crash and worked to identify the driver and vehicle.

Another incident, was reported just before 12:30 a.m.

Officers responded to Butler and Sierra Vista avenues , where witnesses said a woman was walking in and out of the road before a vehicle, which was driving west on Butler, struck her, Williams said.

The woman, who was in her 60s, according to police, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was uninjured, remained at the scene and was cooperating with the investigation, which will include determining whether they were under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The street was closed for a few hours but has since reopened.

Both incident remained under investigation as of Tuesday morning.
