Someone to know: Civilian Marksmanship Program's Jackie Slosnerick

Jackie Slosnerick taught the introductory firearm safety course during the recent Port Clinton Business After Hours event, hosted by the Civilian Marksmanship Program, held at Camp Perry. She's been teaching and competing in air pistol contests for the past 10 years. She calls herself an advocate for marksmanship.

Why do you compete in air pistol?

Because I enjoy it, and I think it's an important thing for people to know how to do. I think there are a lot of things that are available to the youth through this, that a lot of people are not aware of, as far as scholarships and careers. It's a gateway to the Olympics.

Do you have, or need, a military or law enforcement background to take part in the CMT?

No time in the military, but my father was a Marine and a lawyer, so I feel like I do, but, no. There is (one couple) from Marblehead. They come out every week. They just love it. They have been competing the national match, for air gun events, for four or five years, and do well every time. There was one National Guardsman that was neck-and-neck with her for a while. He was like, "Are you kidding me?" She's easily in her 70s. But it was an education for them. That's the beauty of this. Anybody can do it. You don't have to be strong, necessarily. You don't have to be big.

Have there been any Olympians in the CMP at Camp Perry?

Definitely, yes. People have competed here. Taylor Farmer has competed in the Paralympics. Taylor is from the Fremont area. We've held the Olympic Trials here.
