Mike Davis and Guillaume Blais sit in first after day two of the Au Sable River Canoe Marathon Time Trials
GRAYLING - After day two of time trials, Mike Davis and Guillaume Blais have the fastest time at 4:53.21. The pair is ready for Saturday and had this to say after their time trial today. “The water is pretty low compared to past years, so I think our time is pretty fast out there it was good water for falling off the bottom. But on a few spots, it’s easy to get knocked off when you had a kind of a shallow bar, so it was really technical out there,” said Mike Davis. The team sitting in second place, Ryan Halstead and a member of last years’ winning team, Wesley Dean, broke the record for the fastest spring by an all-Michigan team at 4:54.31. “It feels good that we’re both local boys here from Grayling and we got a chance to maybe win the marathon and, you know, doing a sprint like that from our hometown, it’s like, awesome. It always feels like you leave a second or two out there. But yeah, overall, pretty good and just happy to have it done,” said Halstead and Dean.

Jespersen: Relive Gaylord's top high school sports moments of 2023-24
I've talked at length about how fun this year of Gaylord-area sports was to cover. I started the year following Gaylord St. Mary football up to the U.P. and then spent most of 2023-24 following successful teams from across Otsego County as they pulled in awards, accolades and championships in bunches.
