Dan Gilbert can build a legacy that goes beyond Detroit’s buildings | Thompson
The quest for economic justice is not a campaign against wealth. It is a moral demand that economic power recognize its responsibilities to the broader community. That principle becomes especially consequential in Detroit, where billions of dollars in investment have transformed parts of the city while persistent poverty continues to limit the opportunities available to many families. Few figures embody that intersection of wealth, influence and civic possibility more visibly than billionaire businessman Dan Gilbert. His investments have helped reshape downtown Detroit, restore commercial activity and give new purpose to properties that once reflected the city's economic uncertainty. But I believe the most consequential chapter of his story may still be unwritten. It may not be found in the Renaissance Center, the Hudson's Detroit development or the commercial buildings that have become symbols of the city's resurgence. It may be found in the lives of Detroiters whose economic futures could be changed by the resources, influence and imagination he brings to the city. That is why Gilbert's announcement this week of an approximately $1 billion philanthropic commitment toward transforming the Renaissance Center and surrounding riverfront deserves recognition. Lansing sues out-of-state landlord Indus Realty for code violations
LANSING — An out-of-state property owner is being sued by the city for housing code violations, this time for more than a dozen homes the city of Lansing tagged because officials say they're either unfit for human occupancy or have serious code violations. An Oct. 27 hearing is scheduled in Lansing's 54A District Court to see if Indus Realty LLC, which also goes by the name DWL Indus Realty LLC, has done any work on the properties, said Rawley Van Fossen, in charge of Lansing's code enforcement team. The company already has amassed a code enforcement paper trail that goes back for years and unpaid fines and fees that run into thousands of dollars for infractions that don't include court fees. The city has sued Indus Realty more than a dozen times since 2024, most recently in July. The State Journal was prohibited from reviewing the court files involving litigation between the city and Indus in 54A District Court despite Michigan court records being public. Court Administrator Anethia Brewer told a reporter in September that the files were not publicly available but that the court could produce the citations the city issued Indus Realty in six to eight weeks.
