Fowlerville Schools hires new recreation director to oversee youth sports

FOWLERVILLE Fowlerville Community Schools has a new recreation director.

Greg Goffee remembers competing against Gladiator teams while growing up in Dexter. Seven years after a collegiate baseball career at Alma College, Goffee now lives in Howell, and is roommates and close friends with new varsity baseball coach Matt Minaudo.

It's possible he was simply destined for the role.

Goffee started his new position at Fowlerville on April 8. As part of his new responsibilities, he'll focus on supporting the district’s middle and elementary school sports programs. He previously served as athletic director at Byron High School.

“More of my time will be spent (in Fowlerville) working with students at the younger levels, while providing a resource of continuity for high school coaches,” Goffee said. “This is the first time the position will be reporting to (Fowlerville Athletic Director) Jeff Finney, so I think it's going to help with the coordination of activities at all levels."

“I want to make sure we offer a comprehensive recreation program for our athletes,” Goffee added.

As recreation director, Goffee will oversee youth sports for several communities, and ensure the district partners with neighboring municipalities — including the Village of Fowlerville, Conway Township, Cohoctah Township, Handy Township and Iosco Township — in setting up community sports leagues.

The recreational athletic programs are guided by the Community Recreation Advisory Board, which collaborates with the Fowlerville Community Schools Board of Education. Together, the stakeholders aim to offer a diverse array of recreational activities that cater to the community’s best interests, said Fowlerville Community Schools Superintendent Matt Stuard.

“We are incredibly proud of this program and the young people who participate,” said Stuard.

In addition to his role at Byron, Goffee previously worked for various community recreation programs and provided private baseball lessons for student athletes. He has served as a substitute teacher in the past but is not planning on adding that role, for now.

“There’s a lot to do here in this role but it’s an exciting opportunity,” Goffee said. “When I competed against Fowlerville growing up, they had a lot of (successful) sports teams. We want to make sure we put all of our student athletes in the best situation possible so they can be successful.”
