Final Tippecanoe Co. tallies confirm Democratic effect on local races

LAFAYETTE, IN — Democrats claimed five contested seats in a shocking sweep a Purdue political scientist says is a sign that President Donald Trump's decisions met opposition at the local voting booth. Long before the last ballots were tallied Wednesday afternoon, Republican favorites for Tippecanoe County office were coming to terms with resounding defeats. A total of 45,072 people cast their ballots in Tippecanoe County, more than a third on Election Day. At 38.3% of registered voters, it’s a sharp uptick from the 2022 midterms, which saw only 32.1% turn out. “The local level is a sort of general reflection of national trends,” said James McCann, interim head of Purdue’s Department of Political Science. Affordability was the word, he said, pointing to the cost hikes associated with tariffs and immigration policies. “Middle-class voters are really feeling more pinched,” he said. “(The president’s) decisions had a direct impact on everyday life,” and preliminary data suggest affected voters turned out in force to sweep Republicans off the table. Contested Tippecanoe County races Democrat Andrea Burniske beat longtime public servant Julie Roush to become Tippecanoe County’s District 1 commissioner . Roush, a Republican, is closing out her term-limited eight years as county clerk.
