Owatonna Middle School students learn scuba diving in Waterworks class
Owatonna Middle School held its sixth annual “Waterworks” scuba class Friday in conjunction with the Owatonna Diving Club. From 11:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., roughly 20 students were given the unusual opportunity to put on 45 pounds of equipment and learn how to dive from certified divers. Amanda Flohrs began this initiative and is now in her 15th year in education as the health and physical education teacher at Owatonna Middle School. Flohrs said this opportunity began as a means of making use of OMS facilities but has turned into what for some could be a unique once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “When we became the middle school, we weren’t really utilizing the pool as much as we could have. So, I decided that we should do an elective swim class,” Flohrs said. “I created Waterworks in partnership with the Owatonna Diving Club and it’s just kind of evolved. It’s been really fun and how many middle schoolers can say that they learned about scuba diving in school? Alison Byerly renames Cannon River “Carleton River”
In last week’s edition of Carleton Today, amidst announcements of grants-only financial aid policies and faculty retirements, Carleton College President Alison Byerly embarked on a small-text series of “strategic moves” that she said “everyone would be thrilled with.” The actions, aptly dubbed “the Carleton Plan,” would change the names of a variety of landmarks around Northfield and beyond. Among the two dozen proposed changes were renaming the Cannon River to the Carleton River, making Defeat of Jesse James Days (DJJD) into the Victory of Alison Byerly Days (VABD), turning Taco Bell into Chapel Bell and even renaming all of Northfield into North Bellfield.
