St. Martin is opposed to AI in classrooms, wants to ‘audit’ programs
April St. Martin, a candidate for the Owatonna school board, discussed her stances on technology in the classroom, her approach to increasingly limited funding and her primary focus if elected. St. Martin has lived in Owatonna for 33 years and is a 1996 graduate of Owatonna High School. She has three children who went through the Owatonna School District and two grandchildren. She earned her associate’s degree from Riverland Community College and attended Crown College with the intention of earning a four-year degree and becoming an elementary teacher, but was forced to forgo that dream to care for her ailing mother. She is currently an elementary school bus driver, and this is her third school board campaign. St. Martin has entered the race for two primary reasons. The first is that she doesn’t believe that the board has faithfully represented her values or those of the community. “My interest in running for school board is because I see things happening that don’t align with my values or other people’s values,” she said. “I drive a school bus, and I get a lot of feedback from parents feeling like they don’t have a voice, that they can’t have input in things

Winona State dining services work to reduce food waste
Food waste is an ongoing concern on college campuses. As students finish their meals and return their dishes, many may not think about how much food they leave behind. 36-Year teaching veteran, Mrs. Mammel joins Mayo as note-taker
After 36 long, wonderful years of teaching 7th grade English at Willow Creek Middle School, educator Mrs. Mammel came upon retiring this past June, but still wanted to fill the student-shaped hole in her heart. She didn’t want her story in the classroom to end; “I wanted to do something where I’m still working with students, but didn’t have the grind of grading and lesson planning and basically having school consume my life. Faribault schools get new ‘scratch-made’ lunch
Superintendent Jamie Bente donned a hairnet and served up some made-from-scratch chicken spaghetti from the district’s new food service provider to students from the Roosevelt Early Learning Center. Students and staff report they’re loving Faribault’s new school lunches, administrators say. “There’s a lot of happy faces, a lot of happy kids. They’re actually finishing their meals,” Cathy Hammerschmidt, food service coordinator, said. “Taher done a great job showcasing the foods and the recipes and everybody’s really excited to try the food. Teachers have been eating it. It’s been well received.” This is the first year of Faribault Public Schools’ new partnership with Taher, a food service management company based out of Minnetonka. Monday morning, kindergarteners had their chicken spaghetti scooped up by Bente, who will be visiting every school to serve lunch. Superintendent Jamie Bente visited Roosevelt Early Learning Center to serve Faribault’s new food to kindergartners. Barbie Roessler, director of finance and operations for Faribault Public Schools, said the district picked Taher from four other qualified vendors who sent proposals to the school. “We had been in a long-standing relationship with our previous food vendor and knew that a change was needed for our students, families, and staff,” she
