FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — A Fort Wayne woman is facing five felony counts related to a child abuse case dating back to 2023, according to the Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD).
The Indiana Department of Child Services contacted the FWPD in March 2023 about a child abuse case in Fort Wayne, which prompted an investigation by the FWPD.
During the investigation, police learned that the suspect, identified as 36-year-old Elicia Nicole Hurmon, reportedly abused and neglected three children under her care, according to Allen Superior Court documents.
In March 2023, all three children were taken to a hospital for a medical exam, and the youngest child, who was 4 months old at the time, had “significant” bruises on her leg and was “severely” underweight for her age, according to court documents.
The other two children, who were 6 and 7 years old at the time, also had bruises all over their bodies and told police Hurmon would beat them with a belt or her hand, according to court documents.
The older children also reportedly told police they sleep on the floor and did not have a bed to use.
According to court documents, the three victims’ biological mother died in January 2023, and their biological father, who was in prison, arranged for the children to live with Hurmon.
The Allen County Warrants Division arrested Hurmon Tuesday, according to the FWPD.
Hurmon faces three counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury, which is a Level 5 felony, and two counts of domestic battery with bodily injury to a person under 14, which is also a Level 5 felony.
