Jenkins and Auburndale boys, Bartow girls heading to FHSAA state tennis tournament
Three Polk teams advanced out of regionals on Thursday and will play this week in the 2024 FHSAA Tennis State Championships. The George Jenkins boys will begin play Monday along with individual qualifiers Ben Saltman from Winter Haven, and McKeel's Jada Hutto and Briley Davis. The Auburndale boys and Bartow girls will begin play Wednesday, joining individual qualifier Nyer Kerr of Santa Fe Catholic.
One Dead In Fiery Wreck
One person is dead following a two-vehicle fiery wreck Tuesday evening near Wauchula. According to a statement from the Lt. Greg Bueno of the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at 9:03 p.m. near the intersection of State Road 64 and Murphy Road.
Lottery For $75K In Façade Grants Underway
The City of Fort Meade has announced plans to hold its second annual lottery drawing for Community Rehabilitation Agency (CRA) grants. Community Redevelopment Area funds totaling $75,000 fuel the project. Awards are divided equally between commercial and residential projects.

P and Z Board Is Topic of Discussion
The Fort Meade City Commission held its first reading on an ordinance to change the manner in which Planning and Zoning Board members are appointed and their term of office. Proposed requirements include each city commissioner nominate one candidate to the P&Z Board, with additional nominations to be made by the mayor and vice mayor during their terms of office. Appointments must be approved by the commission by majority vote.
Assistant Manager Sutherland Fired
With little backstory made public, Fort Meade Assistant City Manager Maria Sutherland was terminated on April 10 from her responsibilities, which began in 2021. Interim City Manager Dustin Burke said Sutherland’s mishandling of responsibilities, including funds, was the basis for the firing.
