Fifteen Marathon High athletes placed in the Top 4 of the District 16-1A Track and Field Championships on Wednesday, May 1, during which the Dolphin boys claimed the runner-up trophy by scoring 134 points, well behind the 253 piled up by host and champion Palmer Trinity, but comfortably ahead of Divine Savior, who finished third with 96.5, while the Lady ‘Fins, with 104 points, let second place slip through their fingers as Palmer Trinity romped on this side, too, with 244 points to capture the title, and Divine Savior used a second-place finish in the meet-closing 4x400 meter relay to secure the runner-up spot with 108 points.

The top four finishers in each event qualified for next Tuesday’s Region 4-1A Championship at Calvary Christian in Fort Lauderdale, which will include seven Dolphin boys, along with the 4x800 second meter relay, and the 4x400 that placed first. Junior Mikhail Marshall went triple gold, winning both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes and running the leadoff leg on the first-place 4x400-meter relay. His 22.5 points led the team on the track, but he was not a one-man show. Multi-talented senior Mason Buxton also tallied 22.5 points, taking silver in the open 800 meters and bronzes in the javelin and discus — on his second attempt ever in the event. He also ran the third leg on the victorious 4x400-meter relay squad.

The field events can easily slide under the radar, and Fabbianho Louis Jeune scored 18 valuable points in relative obscurity. The tall junior placed second in the high jump, third in the triple jump, and fifth in the long jump.

In a very busy day on the track, sophomore Vance Bursa — who finished second in this year’s 7-Mile Bridge Run — earned a silver medal in the 1,600-meter run, a bronze medal in the 800 and another silver in the 3,200. All that after starting the day by running the 4x800 relay team from fourth to second on the anchor leg.

Other individual qualifiers were freshman Cullen Coleman-Sayer and sixth-grader Mavrick McDonald who placed second-thrid in the pole vault, and eighth-grader Tony Bursa raced to fourth place in the 3,200.

The Lady Dolphins qualified eight individuals for the regional meet, with the top scorer of the day — for either Marathon squad — being sophomore Justice Lee, who prevailed in the shot put and javelin and took second place in the discus, totaling 28 points for the team. Classmate Daysi Williams also qualified in multiple events, taking second in the high jump and fourth in the 200-meter dash. Another sophomore, pole vaulter Ava Merryman, earned her gold medal in a tight battle, clearing 2.70 meters (8 feet, 10 inches) and winning on the countback.

Other Lady ‘Fins region qualifiers are senior Kayesha Christian placing second in the long jump; junior Caylie Globe with fourth places in both the long jump and high jump; junior Marti Kilbourne in the javelin coming in third; junior Tinashay Cunningham was third in the 400; and Samantha Batzer was third in the pole vault.
