Drivers Heading Through Ferndale Stop At This Tiny California Candy Shop For Hand-Pulled Saltwater Taffy
Copper kettles still bubble behind a little storefront window on California’s far north coast, and the smell of warm caramel drifts out onto the sidewalk like an invitation. Dan Shahin, an Arcata City Council Candidate Who Has Railed Against Data Centers, Has $10,000+ Stakes in Nvidia and Amazon
Late last year, Dan Shahin was at the dais, addressing the five members of the Arcata City Council. He’d just launched an election campaign to join them less than two weeks prior, but he wasn’t there to deliver a stump speech. He was angry that the local government hadn’t had any public deliberations on the data center on 11th Street, and it saddened him that it had replaced a lumber store with dozens of employees. By that metric, it is the most valuable company on the planet.

Big Lagoon’s Water Rates Could Triple by 2030
The amount Big Lagoon-ers pay for their water has a chance of tripling by 2029, and much of that’s for paying off salaries. The Big Lagoon Community Services District, the organization tasked with supplying water to the 42 houses on Roundhouse Creek Road (plus Big Lagoon Elementary), announced recently that it’s going to attempt to increase water rates by a large margin. It’s currently $0.005519 per gallon, plus a $54.61 monthly flat fee; if the rate increase goes through, by November 2029, it’ll be $0.035 per gallon, and the flat fee will be $125.
