The Fox & The Leafhoppers
Is it time to confess environmental crimes against nature?. I had decided to expand my pot patch into a new area in the back forty, a cute trick on just one acre, no doubt. I roamed across a grassy field wielding my loppers, creating spots along and behind clumps of bushes. As I got closer to the sunniest spot, a sizable copse of scotch broom and coyote brush on the edge of the field (the former invasive and the latter native), I heard a fox screeching.

Pets of the week: Sara and Bentley
Don’t let whatever you might have heard about ‘tortie ‘tude’ scare you away from Sara! This playful youngster likes lounging but always wakes up for attention or to find a new sunbeam. She also happens to be the perfect age: Old enough that she’s not climbing the curtains but young enough to develop her personality still, and you can influence her. So far, Sara has been getting along with everyone in the Kitty Cottage and would probably like to go home to a friend or get adopted by a partner so they can teach each other about the world. Sara’s your girl if you’re looking for a young, active, curious cat!

Press release from California State Parks – Mendocino:. Let’s dive deep into the fascinating world of Dungeness Crabs! Did you know that these incredible creatures can be found lurking at depths of up to 750 feet below the ocean’s surface? Not just deep-sea dwellers, Dungeness crabs can grow up to a whopping 10 inches across the back! Although, it’s more common to come across these majestic crustaceans in sizes ranging from 6 to 7 inches. Nature’s way of keeping us in awe, for sure!
See Spot Run: North Bay residents renting yards as private dog parks
“[Becoming a sniffspot host] has also introduced me to a wonderful community of pet lovers.”—Alison Klahr. Is it difficult to “sniff” out a good “spot” for your dog to get out in nature? Well, that problem is solved with a new application known as Sniffspot. With an Airbnb-like structure, dog owners can search and rent out someone’s backyard for their furry friends to frolic.
Wrecker 2022: Local Film Rejected by 'Mendocino Film Festival'
Opinion: A Willits man named Bryan Petersen filmed a movie in Willits & Ukiah called "Wrecker 2022" about an emotionally scarred man who became disappointed in the US justice system & had turned into a vigilante. According to an article published in the Ukiah Daily Journal, 'Mendocino Film Festival' rejected his film.
All aboard the Skunk Train, a scenic railroad boasting holiday cheer and woodsy vistas
WILLITS, THE GATEWAY TO WHIMSY: The holiday season famously features so many fragrant touchstones, including evergreen wreaths, gingerbread houses, and peppermint sticks. Still, some revelers seek the skunkier side of the season, though not the skunky scent we associate with the spunky stripe-tailed critters. Rather, they're eager to ride the Skunk Train, the iconic attraction that slowly and scenically wends its way through the redwoods near Fort Bragg. But the Mendocino County charmer can also depart from nearby Willits, which it will do when the Christmas Tree Train, which the Skunk Train quaintly becomes near the end of the year, begins to roll on select November and December dates. While some other yuletide choo-choos take their sweet story notes from well-known picture books and oft-told tales, the Skunk Train finds its fanciful character in the redwoods, music, and its own "Christmas magic."
Review: The Seafarer now at Mendocino Theatre Company
“When your number’s up, your number’s up” – Ivan Curry. Comedic, sinister, thought-provoking, and thoroughly entertaining, The Seafarer, presently in production at the Mendocino Theatre Company, has the Devil in the details. Written by Connor McPherson and titled after an Old English poem, the play is set in present-day Baldoyle, a former Irish fishing village now a suburb of Dublin. The name Baldoyle translates as dark-haired stranger presaging what is to come for four friends.
Pets of the week: Gabby and Chance
Meet ten-year-old Gabby, 75lbs of pure love and fluff. After Gabby’s owner passed away, she surrendered to us at the beginning of October with her sister, Chance. We are still getting to know Gabby, but with the help of her previous foster family and volunteers, we are learning what a sweet, mellow-mannered girl she is. Gabby gets along with her sister and most male dogs but does not get along with other alpha females. We also know she would best be in a home with no cats. Gabby loves people and kids, which makes her a great family dog. If you are looking for that perfect companion for your family who can go for a nice hike or walk on the coastal trails but also be very happy relaxing at your feet during lunch out, Gabby is your girl. With Gabby’s age, our vet suspects mild to moderate dental disease that may need further vet care after adoption.
Letters to the Editor: Grant
I recently learned that the Mendocino Coast Humane Society and the many animals it helps need our assistance. I’d assumed that MCHS, which does so much good, hard, and sometimes heartbreaking work, had city, county, and national financial support. But, no. The City of Fort Bragg pays MCHS a...
