California’s largest rhododendron show to take place May 4 & 5 in Fort Bragg
FORT BRAGG, Ca., 5/1/24 – The 45th annual John Druecker Memorial Rhododendron Show will take place this weekend, May 4 and 5, at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens in Fort Bragg. The event showcases over 800 rhododendron and azalea trusses from throughout the region. Locals are invited to submit their blooms to compete for numerous awards.

The Garden Club’s 15th Annual “Sidewalk Gardens to Bragg About” contest recognizes and honors those yards and the gardeners who lovingly tend them. Any time from May 1 – May 17, please nominate a beautiful yard – your own or another’s – if it is in the Fort Bragg city limits, can be seen from the sidewalk, and is a pleasing-to-the-eye, well-kept space.

Mendocino College Student Art Show: A multi-sensory experience
Arriving a bit early for the Mendocino College Student Art Show’s opening reception on Thursday afternoon, April 25, three tables in the Center Theater foyer — bountifully laden with late-afternoon finger foods graciously provided by the Mendocino College Arts Program — are still covered in protective Saran Wrap: Acini di Pepe salad (delicious!); corn ribs with lime-cilantro crema; tiny, briny, black olives; a charcuterie board with roast beef, salami, a wheel of brie and a wedge of white and yellow cheeses all garnished with grapes and strawberries; pulled pork and apple slaw sliders; artichokes with butter; potato wedges; mushroom toast topped with vegan cheese and broccoli micro greens (also delicious!) and a cookie selection of brown butter, chocolate and peanut butter.
Community Library Notes: Kiddie literacy
In time for Mother’s Day, the library has added some gems to its robust collection of children’s books. A few are brand new, and others have been award-winners in recent years. We weren’t thinking only of mothers (and, by extension, all parental units) when we made our selections; we were prepping for a get-acquainted visit from the Community Center of Mendocino’s After School Enrichment Program earlier this week. The children were given a tour of the library, a story time with one of our librarians, and an opportunity to choose a book to check out. A few of their options are described below.
MTC presenting critically acclaimed play Born With Teeth
