Students reflect on 9/11 anniversary
Winona Senior High School (WSHS) students weren’t yet born the day of the September 11, 2001 attacks, but learning about the tragedy has helped shape them. They’ve learned about it in past years, recognizing its impact on the country and those they know. To mark 9/11’s 25th anniversary, some students last week heard more from their teachers and local first responders about their memories of that day and its lasting effects, then thanked local first responders for their service.

OHS student board rep says reaction to cell phone policy has been mixed
This year, Owatonna High School has implemented a new cell phone policy that prohibits their use in the classroom. In Monday’s school board work session, members of the board discussed the policy’s reception and the general sentiments expressed by students and staff through the first two weeks of classes. The policy has received mixed reviews from students. However, anecdotal evidence presented by Owatonna School Board Clerk Andrea Van Gelder indicates that teachers appear to have enjoyed the cut-and-dried nature of the policy and the effect it’s had on the level of engagement they’re experiencing in the classroom. “Teachers stopped me mid-week, not even at school, thanking us for that change and talking about how big of a difference it’s making in their classroom,” Van Gelder said. Van Gelder also noted that the students’ improved engagement has led teachers to consider expanding lesson plans to account for the rate at which they’re covering material. “Some teachers have told me, ‘I’m going to have to come up with more material at the end of the semester.’” Van Gelder said. “Teachers are saying they’re further along. Because we’re getting through more in the first few days of school.” School board student representative Lowell

No Tummies Left Behind donates $600 to cover overdue school lunch balances
Five years ago, Ella Bettner was a sixth grader making and selling bracelets to help classmates who couldn’t afford their school lunches. On Aug. 17, she returned to the Faribault Public Schools Board as the founder of No Tummies Left Behind, presenting a $600 donation and a broader vision for her organization. “Since the last time I was here, a lot has changed, not only within my organization but within my own perspective,” Bettner told the board. Bettner said her work began with an effort to pay off negative lunch balances. As she has grown, so has her understanding of the issue she is trying to address. “I continue to work toward the school because I think about the parents who are financially struggling and may not always be able to make sure the child is getting meals they need each day,” she said. “I think about the kids who are eating lunch on a Friday afternoon, not knowing if this could be the last meal until the following Monday.” Food insecurity can be difficult to see, Bettner said, but that does not mean it is absent from local communities. “Food insecurity has been a problem for years, and unfortunately,

District to host school referendum information meetings
Over the past few weeks I have had the opportunity to share information on the upcoming referendum with various groups. The conversations have been productive and it seems most leave with a better understanding of our facility needs and the projects we are looking to complete. One key message I am sharing: these projects are not about building neglect. In fact, quite the opposite. Our facility team does an amazing job maintaining our schools and fields. However, major system updates and renovations require more funding than our annual budget can support. School finance rules are specific on how funding can be used, thus the need to utilize a voter-approved bond. WATCH YOUR MAIL This week a brochure will be landing in the mailboxes of all school district residents. Please take time to read and learn more about our process and the proposed projects. JOIN US SEPT. 21 or 22 The District will host informational community meetings on Monday, Sept. 21 at 6:30 p.m. and Tuesday, Sept. 22 at noon to show residents the spaces that need updating as well as answer any questions.
