Anderson teachers vote ‘no confidence’ in superintendent, union says
Anderson teachers said they’ll voice concerns about Cascade Union Elementary School District’s leadership when they attend the fragmented board's district meeting on Wednesday, April 15. Members of the Anderson-Cascade Teachers Association will share with board members results of a “no confidence” vote in Superintendent Jason Provence, said the association's president Kristina Taylor. Forty-three of the union's 51 members participated in the vote the week of April 6, Taylor said, “with 72% … voting they did not have confidence in superintendent Provence’s ability to run the district.” The union will share the results of that vote with the district’s two remaining permanent board members, Diane Kimball and Crista Munns, and Shasta County Board of Education Trustee Jackie LaBarbera. The county appointed LaBarbera to the board temporarily to ensure a quorum until the district appoints people to fill three empty seats — vacated by members who resigned in late March over what they said was Provence’s handling of salary negotiations . AUHSD Board to vote on 3 new hires for West Valley athletics
The Anderson Union High School district released the agenda for the upcoming meeting of the Board of Trustees, set to take place at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Anderson Union High School Library. At the meeting, the Board of Trustees will vote on three new hires for West Valley athletics, including Justin Byxbe for head coach of the varsity volleyball team, Tim Harles for head coach of the varsity football team and Travis Gurney for head coach of the freshman football team. Both Harles and Byxbe appeared on the District’s agenda for a special meeting that was cancelled just hours before its 9 a.m. start time on April 1. According to the District, the meeting was cancelled due to a sick board member. West Valley Football Harles was brought in as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator for the 2025 season after serving as the head football coach for Las Plumas High School. Following Jason Weston’s resignation in December , it seemed Harles was the likely choice to take over the program. In 2025, under Weston and Harles, the Eagles finished with a 7-4 record behind a dominant run game and defense. In February, however, former West Valley head coach Greg

Shasta College honored for 'Carbon Sinks' waste project
Shasta College was honored by the Board of Governors in Sacramento for its sustainability and innovative environmental practices, the school announced. The college received the 2025 Excellence in Energy and Sustainability – Innovative Project award for its “Carbon Sinks” project, focusing on composting food and agricultural waste. The project is a collaborative effort led by the college’s food services and agriculture and natural resources teams. Students play a significant role in the process, collecting waste from the cafeteria twice a week and transporting it to the college’s farm for composting. Twice a year, all compost generated is spread on the farm’s fields. The college also uses the worm casting harvested from worm bins in potting mixes at the campus nursery and in planting areas in the campus arboretum. “This was truly a collaborative effort across a number of campus departments and is an excellent, low- or no-cost example of the hands-on learning environment we integrate into every aspect of our college culture, both in and outside of the classroom,” said Shasta College President Frank Nigro, who credited much of the program's success to Director of Food Services Denise Axtell and "the collaborative approach from both our horticulture and ag program

Cascade school board members resign over superintendent's salary offer
Three Cascade Union Elementary School District board members resigned their seats after what former board president Rod Hayes alleges was regressive bargaining by the district’s superintendent. On March 24, Superintendent Jason Provence offered a 3% salary increase with a 2% one-time bonus to the Anderson Cascade Teachers Association, Hayes said. That's after the district had already offered the association a 5% salary increase on Jan. 13. “By ignoring the right of the Board to set limits for negotiations … Mr. Provence has also ignored the will of the voters that elected us and the community we serve,” Hayes said in his March 28 resignation letter. In a 5-0 vote, the board decided that a 5% ongoing salary increase and raising teachers’ healthcare cap to the same level as management and administration “was the bare minimum” the district should offer teachers, Hayes said in a statement emailed to the Record Searchlight. The board approved the 5% offer on Dec. 16, 2025, and again on Jan. 13 after negotiations were delayed. The board directed Provence to resubmit the proposal at a special meeting on March 27 — three days after Hayes said Provence made the 3% offer. Note to readers: If you
