The Iowa Board of Pharmacy’s says the Walgreens store in Burlington temporarily closed in October of last year due to a shortage of pharmacists and sent customers prescriptions to a Walgreens in Fort Madison but failed to communicate that to the public, customers, or even store staff. According to the board the exact same set of difficulties occurred when the Walgreens Pharmacy in Fort Madison temporarily closed in November of last year due to a reported lack of staff. Each of the stores was fine $1,000 by the board and order to develop new policies.

Watch for discontinued Medicare Advantage plans

GRINNELL — According to the Iowa Insurance Division and Senior Health Insurance Information Program — Senior Medicare Patrol, more than 87,000 Iowa Medicare beneficiaries statewide have received notice that their current plan is being canceled or discontinued in their county. In Poweshiek County, an estimated 465 beneficiaries may be affected. The Open Enrollment Period for 2027 Medicare Advantage Plans is now open and runs until Dec. 7. If your plan is discontinued, please select a new plan before Dec. 31 to ensure you do not have a gap in coverage. Failure to select a plan could lead to unexpected medical and prescription costs. Iowans whose Medicare Advantage plans are canceled qualify for a “Guaranteed Issue” right. This allows them to switch to Original Medicare and purchase an available Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy without medical underwriting — meaning insurers cannot deny coverage or charge higher premiums due to pre-existing health conditions.
