St. Mary’s Albia’s Election Day Dinner returns Nov. 3
What are your memories of the Election Day Dinner at St. Mary’s Albia? The question was posed as preparation began on this year’s event to be held on Nov. 3 as a drive through and pickup dinner from 4:30-6:30 p.m. The memories question led to two other major questions. Why was Election Day chosen as the “primetime” to have a fundraiser for the parish and what year was the first meal held? Inquiring minds went to work to try to find the answers. There is nothing in the church records or history that gives the date of the first Election Day Dinner. Descendants of the first organizers and workers recalled what they were told or remembered.

Kalona City Council to Meet Monday, Loans and Grants on the Agenda
The City of Kalona will continue to explore loan and grant options for its water and wastewater systems at the first of its two November meetings on Monday. The meeting will begin with a public hearing on a proposal to enter into a water revenue loan and disbursement agreement. The loan would see the city borrow money for water plant upgrades, additional wells for the city’s water system, and a line to connect the north and south water systems so that both can operate from one plant. If approved, the total amount of the loan will not exceed $7.5 million. This is related to the $6.2 million facility the city is constructing following Iowa Department of Natural Resources requirements.

The Sprawling Iowa Swap Meet Where Forty Dollars Leaves Your Trunk Full
About 20 acres of antiques, primitives, glassware, and farm tools appear on a county fairground only three times a year. Then they vanish again. I love that kind of disappearing act. This Iowa market has been running since 1976. Hundreds of vendors set up for four days, Thursday through Sunday.
