Southeast Iowa needs the economic boost a steel plant can bring

Call it out of the blue, but the news last week has state and local leaders feeling anything but: the largest steel mill in United States history will soon be built in Iowa. Joined in the Oval Office by several members of Iowa’s congressional delegation and his own administration, President Donald Trump announced Monday that Mesabi Metallics intends to construct a $15 billion plant in Lee County in the southeast corner of the state. The plant will process iron ore extracted from the company’s new mine in Minnesota, producing 10 million tons of steel annually. The project is expected to create 1,750 permanent jobs paying an average of $49 per hour — a six-figure salary — on top of as many as 6,000 jobs created for the construction of the mill. The project is made possible in part by generous tax incentives provided by the state. The Iowa Legislature met in a special session Friday for the purpose of amending Iowa’s Major Economic Growth Attraction (MEGA) program, an existing state program designed to help Iowa compete with other states to attract large-scale development projects that come with big capital investments. MEGA, created in 2024 with near-unanimous support from lawmakers, offers
