The Richard David Kann (RDK) Melanoma Foundation is welcoming Florida students to spread sun safety and skin care awareness through its annual Kinney Art Contest. This is the first year that the foundation has opened submissions to elementary, middle, and high school students across the state.

First, second, and third place cash prizes will be awarded in each grade level. Both students and teachers from all 67 Florida counties can win big while spreading the message of sun safety. More than $15,000 in cash prizes will be awarded.

The foundation will announce nine statewide winners and present their prizes on Melanoma Monday (May 6), a day dedicated to promoting the importance of melanoma prevention and early detection. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, and a few bad burns before the age of 18 more than doubles an individual’s chances of developing skin cancer.

The Kinney Art Contest is named in memory of the late Dr. John Kinney, a longtime RDK Melanoma Foundation board member who advocated tirelessly to help educate young people about sun safety through the Students Against Melanoma Clubs network.
