Florence has announced that it has been designated as a Certified Autism Center by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards.

This achievement signifies that the town successfully completed comprehensive autism training, equipping town staff with the expertise needed to effectively serve individuals with sensory challenges.

“I am delighted to announce that, in collaboration with the IBCCES, the town of Florence is now a Certified Autism Center,” Mayor Tara Walter stated in a press release. “Our team’s completion of this specialized training will enhance our ability to provide exceptional service and experiences for members of the autism community.”

During Monday’s town council meeting, Walter also proclaimed April as “National Autism Acceptance Month” and thanked Roger Biede, executive director of the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce, for initiating these efforts with the town. Along with the proclamation, Florence Town Hall will be lit blue throughout April to show support for autism awareness.

“This designation demonstrates Florence’s commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all their residents and visitors. April is Autism Acceptance Month – a reminder that accessibility should be a goal of everyone, no matter the industry,” stated Myron Pincomb, IBCCES board chairman, in the release.

To further promote accessibility, the IBCCES has also developed AutismTravel.com and CertifiedAutismCenter.com , offering free online resources for families to identify certified locations and professionals.
