Evansville soybean crushing plant to feed biofuel industry
Hello, Rock County! Here are your top Friday headlines. Wisconsin immigrant advocacy organization Voces de la Frontera is assigning a network of election observers and community volunteers ahead of the Nov. 3 election, citing concerns that if federal agents or law enforcement are stationed near polling places, it could intimidate voters. Japanese tourists love Edgerton and Wisconsin because of the city and state's ties to the Sterling North-penned children's novel "Rascal," which Japanese people revere because it was adapted into a 1970s anime series. A group has established the "Rascal Trail," a new network of tourist stops curated because of ties to both Rascal, and pieces of Japanese culture embedded in Wisconsin. Stops are in Edgerton, where Sterling North grew up, and in Madison, Milwaukee and Jefferson, among other communities statewide. Do you have a story you'd like the Gazette to follow? Shell Lake FFA members attend World Dairy Expo
MADISON — Five Shell Lake FFA members traveled to Madison to attend World Dairy Expo, one of the largest dairy events in the industry. The experience gave students an opportunity to learn more about the dairy industry while seeing firsthand the many careers, businesses and opportunities connected to agriculture. Four Shell Lake FFA members competed in the dairy judging contest. Owen Leckel led the Shell Lake team as the chapter’s highest-placing competitor, followed by Brayden, Rachel, and Jesika. In addition to competing, students had the opportunity to explore World Dairy Expo and see the many different aspects of the dairy industry represented at the event. From dairy cattle and judging to equipment, technology, products and agricultural businesses, the expo provided students with a look at the size and diversity of today’s dairy industry. Shell Lake FFA is excited to have a full dairy judging team competing again. The team will continue preparing throughout the school year as they look ahead to FFA Regionals in March 2027. CHS soybean crushing plant in Evansville will be heavily tied to biofuels
EVANSVILLE — The official start of agribusiness cooperative CHS’s work to build its landmark, $700-million Evansville soybean crushing plant came Wednesday with ceremonially-tossed dirt, politicians’ speeches and word of a new focus for the future facility: biofuels. CHS company officials, one Federal lawmaker, and the U.S. Agriculture Department’s deputy director all touted the plant’s soybean seed oil extraction-and-refining business at the future Evansville crushing plant as being tied largely to the domestic production of biofuels. That’s a pivot from earlier plans to fully refine seed oil for food-grade use at CHS’s Evansville plant. CHS Executive Vice President John Griffith said the company reshaped the scope of seed oil processing planned at Evansville because federal policy shifts are pressing for growth in domestically-produced renewable fuels. Soybean farmers had been particularly hard-hit by federal policies that saw producers particularly harmed by tariff-fueled reductions in export capacity, and domestic use is adjusting to a new normal. Griffith said the biofuel market has become the primary market for soybean oil. “With the (federal) policy support and the push for more on the biodiesel front, we decided to change the scope, not go to full food-grade RBD oil,” he said in an interview following the

This new eastside facility helps local produce reach community plates
To the casual observer, the potential impact of a nondescript warehouse on Madison’s eastside isn’t obvious. But for those who have dedicated the last several years and more to transforming the building into a storage and processing hub for area farmers, the possibilities are abundant. Madison’s new multimillion-dollar, 10,000-square-foot Foodshed Partnership facility is capable of funneling several hundred thousand pounds of local produce each year into Dane, Jefferson and Waukesha county restaurants, food pantries and cafeterias at hospitals, schools and business campuses. “It’s about giving farmers a lot more room to scale and grow,” says Rachael Maysels, executive director of Madison’s FairShare CSA Coalition .
