Fayetteville to install mural on Nelson Hackett Boulevard

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — The city of Fayetteville says work has begun on a mural for Nelson Hackett Boulevard.

According to a press release, Fayetteville-based artist Joëlle Storet is working on the 90-foot-long installment.

The release says Storet was selected for the project by the Fayetteville Arts Council in collaboration with the Historic District Commission and Black Historic Preservation Commission members.

The city expects work to be finished by June 15. During the installation, portions of the sidewalk and buffer space on Nelson Hackett Boulevard may be blocked off for brief periods. The city advises drivers and pedestrians to be aware of workers, signage and equipment in the area.

Storet said her mural will depict Nelson Hackett, landmarks and local historical figures with the “goal of showcasing history and diversity.” The release says Storet is originally from Austria, and she draws inspiration from her Belgian-Congolese upbringing.

According to the release, the project is part of an ongoing effort to cover the 500-foot-long concrete retaining wall along Nelson Hackett Boulevard with murals before Fayetteville’s bicentennial in 2028.
