BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — Now in its 41st year, the Great Plains Food Bank serves as North Dakota’s only food bank.

Its partner network includes 200 food pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, and other charitable feeding programs operating in 99 communities across N.D. and Clay County, Minnesota. Great Plains Food Bank is hosting its Packathon this week.

“Packathon is a combined fundraising and volunteer event to help raise money for Great Plains food bank. The money that is raised goes specifically to help transport the food that is packed through Packathon all across our service area, which is all across North Dakota and into Clay County Minnesota.”, explained Rebecca Knutson, the corporate engagement manager at Great Plains Food Bank.

As participants in Packathon, corporations, businesses, and other organizations assemble teams who come together inside the Great Plains Food Bank Bismarck Regional Service Center and Fargo warehouse to spend time giving back by repacking meals to be distributed to those in need.

Mental Health Month: More than a gut feeling

“Today, we’re coming as a company to come and help with packing different lunches or food at the Great Plains Food Bank.”, shared Jaime Fuchs a volunteer with Basin Electric. “It feels so good to be able to give back and help the community out in this project.”

Many volunteers from Basin Electric helped with the effort on Wednesday. Basin Electric’s Charitable Giving Administrator says Packathon is a great thing to support in our community.

“At Basin Electric, we are committed to our community and we this is just one way we show it. We love to give back to the people that we serve. We have seen so much more need lately, and food is just one of those needs that we can all rally around and help out,” said Jennifer Holen, the charitable giving administrator at Basin Electric.

The Great Plains Food Bank needs volunteers year-round, not just during the Packathon.

Those interested in volunteering their time, please reach out to the food bank.

Great Plains Food Bank hopes to package around 40,000 pounds of food during the Packathon effort. This would be enough food to fill a semi-truck.
