The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office has arrested and charged an 81-year-old Fancy Gap man with second degree murder in the April 29 death of his wife in Carroll County.

According to Carroll County Sheriff Kevin A. Kemp, his department received a call of a domestic incident in progress at 879 Autumn View Road in Fancy Gap at approximately 8:4o p.m. on Sunday, April 28. Kemp said the two parties involved were David Wesley Bolen, Sr., 81 years of age, and his wife, Jean Jackson Bolen, 84.

“An altercation ensued between the two parties, resulting in the death of Jean Jackson Bolen,” Kemp said. “David Wesley Bolen Sr. was charged with second degree murder, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and maliciously shooting in an occupied building. David Wesley Bolen, Sr. is currently being held at New River Valley Regional Jail without bond.”

Kemp said Jean Jackson Bolen, who served more than 30 years as a Deputy Clerk of Court for the Carroll County Circuit Court, was transported from the scene to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where she passed away April 29.

Bolen’s mugshot from New River Valley Regional Jail shows him with a black eye and several bumps and bruises. Kemp said law enforcement was not involved in regards to Mr. Bolen’s injuries

“That occurred by other means. It did not occur from law enforcement,” Kemp said. “I can’t state if it happened prior to or after the incident because of everything that was going on, but it did not occur from any Carroll County law enforcement.”

Bolen was scheduled to appear in Carroll County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on May 1, according to court records.

Kemp said certain details of the death and the events surrounding it are still under investigation.
