Fall River, Mass Audubon team up for free birdwatching trips. Here's how to join in.

FALL RIVER — Amazon.com in a recent commercial touted Fall River as a birdwatching destination — which was news to area birdwatchers. But the city of Fall River and Mass Audubon are working together to manifest it.

The city and the environmental group are collaborating for Wings on the Watuppa Reservation: Birdwatching in the Bioreserve , a free event introducing people to our feathered friends in the city’s forest. Transportation is even included.

When is Wings on the Watuppa Reservation?

May 25, with a rain date of June 1.

There are four sessions: 8, 9, 10 and 11 a.m.

Who can come to the event?

It's open to all ages and those who can walk a mile on a wooded path.

Can I just show up, or do I have to register?

Registration is free but necessary, to make sure there are enough binoculars and educational materials for everyone. Go to https://www.massaudubon.org/programs/allens-pond/92779-wings-on-the-watuppa-reservation to sign up.

Where is the event going to be held, and how do I get there?

It will start at the Watuppa Reservation headquarters, 2929 Blossom Road, and include a milelong hike on the Boathouse Lane trail to North Watuppa Pond. It’s a flat, even path.

You can drive there and park at the site if you like — but be cautious and enter Blossom Road via Old Bedford Road in Westport. Don’t enter Blossom Road via Wilson Road in Fall River, as the unpaved road in that direction can be treacherous.

If you’d rather let someone else do the driving, a trolley will take people from the Third Street parking lot downtown. When you register for the event, the confirmation email will include a registration form to reserve a seat on the trolley.

How should I dress for the event?

Wear supportive shoes and comfortable clothes for taking a short walk in the woods. If you don't have your own binoculars, Mass Audubon will lend you some.
