FAIRMONT, W.Va. (WBOY) — Fairmont State University hosted the ‘Kickin’ it for Katy’ 5K race on Saturday morning in honor of Kaitlynn Jade, a Fairmont State student who took her own life three years ago.

The goal of the annual event is to bring awareness to suicide prevention and mental healthcare. Event organizers said this year’s race has been the biggest yet, with 300 people in attendance, and that community support has been immense.

Gina Dixon, Co-Race Director for ‘Kickin’ it for Katy’ 5K and Katy’s grandmother, was grateful for the 100 volunteers, many of whom have experienced mental health struggles of their own. “We’re here to let people know that you’re not alone.”

The race was followed by Stomp Out the Stigma, where there were remarks, food, live music and tables providing further information about mental health.

All money raised at the event will help to fund the Kaitlynn Jade Forensic Memorial Scholarship. Those interested in donating to the scholarship can do so at kickinitforkaty.com .
