Six students have advanced to the UIL State Academic meet in Austin on May 13-15. UIL students competed in 13 events on April 27, earning third place as a school out of 64 schools in the Region.

“I was so excited to get first in the region meet,” junior Carolyn Dunlap said. “It was great to see that I had improved since last year and I am so grateful that I have the opportunity to go to the state UIL meet in Austin!”

Those attending the state meet are senior Eashan Kalyanji and junior Preston Scott returning in Computer Applications, junior Carolyn Dunlap returning in Editorial Writing, freshman Adalyn Peterson in Headline Writing, and Kalyanji, Scott, junior Newton Hartley and junior Luke Cruce in Computer Science.

This will be their fourth year in a row to attend state as a team.

“I am prepared to defend my state champion title,” Kalyanji said, “and have lots of fun doing it.”

Results from the regional meet were as follows: Accounting, Eashan Kalyanji 6th; Computer Applications, Eashan Kalyanji 2nd, Preston Scott 3rd, Aiden Adams 6th; Computer Science, first place team, Newton Hartley 2nd, Luke Cruce 5th; Journalism, third place team; Editorial, Carolyn Dunlap 1st; Headline Writing, Adalyn Peterson 3rd, Callie Morgan 5th; Literary Criticism, second place team, Anna Moyer 4th, Lydia Morgan 5th; Number Sense, third place team, Alfonso Rodriguez 6th; Science, third place team, Lydia Morgan 4th; and Spelling, third place team, Yahir Yepez 5th.

“I don’t know how special it is to go to state because I haven’t not went to state,” Hartley said. “Besides that, all I know is that I will do better than last time, which alone makes me happy.”

This is the last year that computer applications is a UIL event. It will be discontinued. Eashan and Preston advanced and placed at State in this event for the last 3 years.

“I am very sad that they are ending the event for 1A-4A,” computer applications coach Misty Rhoden said. “Computer Applications has been a fun and rewarding experience for me and my students.”
