There was a time when Allie Hughes was set on going to Blinn College in Brenham.

But one visit to Jacksonville changed that. Hughes recently signed with Jacksonville College to play golf for the next two years.

“I liked the campus more and the atmosphere was better,” Hughes said.

Hughes is one of the most decorated athletes not just in golf, but in Fairfield. She’s a four-time region tournament qualifier, three-time district champion and three-time state tournament qualifier.

Hughes will compete in this year’s Class 3A State Tournament this year as well. The girls state tournament will take place May 6-7 at Shadow-Glen Golf Club in Manor.

“Allie is one of the most prolific golfers Fairfield has ever had,” Fairfield golf coach Kris Ballew said. “She’s accomplished a lot. She won district three years in a row, she’s going to regionals all four years. Allie is a very good golfer. She’s determined to win every time she goes out there.”

Hughes plans to be a physical therapy assistant when she graduates from college.

She plans to transfer to a fouryear school following her two-year tenure at Jacksonville.

“I’m going to play my best (at Jacksonville),” Hughes said. “I probably won’t win the conference my first year, but I definitely plan to win my second year.”
