UD seeks voluntary retirements amid financial turbulence
The University of Delaware has launched a voluntary retirement incentive program for staff who are eligible for retirement next year as it seeks to slim its budget “to strengthen long-term financial sustainability.” The program is entirely voluntary, according to the school’s announcement , but comes amid turbulent financial times for the university. Employees who are eligible for the program are being notified by the school’s human resources staff and informational meetings will be held in the coming weeks. The specific incentive package being offered to employees is not clear. One of the letters sent by the university and shared with Spotlight Delaware states that eligible employees have until Nov. 11 to notify the university of their decision. If they choose the retirement option, the university holds the final decision to accept the employee’s choice or delay their retirement date “depending upon the operational needs of [their] unit.” If accepted without changes, the employee is then presented with a retirement agreement that is due back signed to the university by Jan. 4, 2027, with their retirement starting Jan. 1, 2027. Newark named among top 50 college towns in America, with UD fueling
Newark is one of the top-50 college towns in the country, if you ask WalletHub. The personal finance and data website went about ranking the "2027 Best College Towns in America" this fall, examining more than 400 cities with benchmarks like affordability, social environment, as well as academic and economic opportunity. In a list released Oct. 20 , the top-five came in at Austin, Texas; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Charlottesville, Virginia; Raleigh, North Carolina; and Atlanta. Those are the homes of the University of Texas at Austin, University of Michigan, University of Virginia, University of North Carolina, Spelman College and Morehouse College and many more nearby. Those cities were lauded for different factors, like low unemployment, high number of attractions outside of class, high student counts in town and much more . Michigan even got a shoutout for the third-lowest average pizza price in the United States, which you can interpret however you'd like. And out of all of these cities examined, the home of the University of Delaware landed at No. 45. It creeps up to No. 17 when adjusted for city size, among the site's "small city" rankings. The study only included in-depth explainers for a few cities in
