FAIRFIELD, NJ -- Two suspects from Hudson County were arrested in connection with a motor vehicle theft this week.
The Fairfield Police Department announces the arrests of Dina Santiago-Caraballo, 35, of West New York, and Karl Diaz, 45, of Union City on multiple charges stemming from a motor vehicle stop on April 14.
At 2:36 a.m. last Sunday, officers Ryan Cleary and Patrick Reynolds were on patrol and observed a dark-colored BMW exit onto Route 46 West from behind a closed business. As they followed behind, police say that they observed the driver of the vehicle commit several motor vehicle violations. A motor vehicle stop was conducted in the parking lot of the Red Roof Inn.
The officers approached the vehicle, which was occupied by Santiago-Carballo and Diaz, and it is alleged that a white, powdery and rock-like substance could be seen inside the vehicle.
Diaz exited the vehicle upon the officer’s request and was placed under arrest. Santiago-Caraballo initially refused to exit the vehicle. Once she did, police say that she failed to comply with the officer’s directions, but was subsequently placed under arrest.
A search of the vehicle revealed several pieces of drug paraphernalia and CDS. Police say that Santiago-Carballo was in possession of additional CDS and paraphernalia.
Santiago-Caraballo and Diaz were subsequently transported to police headquarters for processing and the vehicle was impounded. It was later determined that the vehicle they were driving had been stolen in Union City, however the owner was unaware this until they were contacted by police.
Santiago-Caraballo was charged with receiving stolen property, possession of drug paraphernalia, being under the influence of CDS, obstruction, resisting arrest, destruction of evidence, possession of CDS, possession of prescription ledger drugs, and multiple motor vehicle violations.
Diaz was charged with possession of CDS, possession of drug paraphernalia, being under the influence, and destruction of evidence.
Both were subsequently transported to Essex County Jail pending an initial appearance.
