DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — Wright Patterson Air Force Base and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources welcomed local high school students for its annual Arbor Day celebration.

For the last eight years, the base has hosted this celebration where Fairborn High School students come to listen to speakers and plant trees in the area.

Among the planted trees are the Ohio native Tuliptree, a member of the magnolia family. According to ODNR , the Tuliptree has the largest solitary flower of any native tree in Ohio.

Event organizers say it’s important for younger generations to learn about the impact trees have on our environment.

“While trees provide biodiversity homes for wildlife enjoyment of the public, they reduce our energy cost. There’s a myriad of reasons why we want to plant trees and help sustain our natural habitats,” said Danielle Trevino, biological scientist.

Wright Patt has been considered a “Tree City USA” community for the last 27 years.
