This Wilmington deli blends New York roots with Southern tastes
S&L Deli opened in 2005 with the goal of bringing true New York flavors to Wilmington as the expansive growth of Southeastern North Carolina was just beginning. Tami Natoli, who runs the business with her husband, Louie Natoli, and brother, Steve Ercole, used their extensive culinary background to build a restaurant around products and recipes that were difficult to find locally at the time – like Kaiser rolls, bagels and Taylor ham. In 21 years, though, the restaurant at 2317 S. 17th St. has grown into a fixture for regulars. It’s more of a diner than a deli, with a wide selection of breakfast and lunch sandwiches, deli salads and pastries . But the New York vibes are strong – you can see it in the collection of New York license plates on the wall, the Statue of Liberty in the logo and even in their remembrance of 9/11. “That’s one thing we never forget,” Tami Natoli said. There’s an easel at the front with names of those who lost their lives and other mementos of the tragic event that took place 25 years ago. That includes a growing selection of paintings, photos and other New York City art. “Everybody's

Carolina Beach eyes eminent domain over restaurant's blocked path
The town of Carolina Beach is considering a variety of solutions including eminent domain after complaints of a high traffic sidewalk being blocked by an oceanfront restaurant’s new patio. At a Town Council workshop on Sept. 22, Community Development Director Jeremy Hardison briefed the council on concerns over the new patio setup at Hurricane Alley’s, which blocks pedestrian access leading to the beach. The building, located at 5 Boardwalk, is situated next to an ADA accessible ramp that is also obstructed by the tables and chairs. Though the sidewalk has long been publicly accessible, it is private property owned by the restaurant. The new patio, which was introduced this spring, created a “choking point” for pedestrian traffic, Hardison said. The setup also prompted concerns over emergency and public safety access. The path forward Town officials discussed rerouting the sidewalk around the back of the building and obtaining an easement from the neighboring Marriott hotel. Rebuilding the sidewalk further east was also considered, though concerns were raised about state Coastal Area Management Act regulations. Mayor Lynn Barbee noted that obtaining an easement would be the easiest solution. The town’s plans for a new public park directly adjacent to Hurricane Alley’s has

Watch Review: Beachcombing With The Citizen Promaster WaveTracker JV3000
Located at the mouth of the Cape Fear River, Federal Point sits at a precipitous vantage point guarding New Inlet — a vital entrance to the river that connects the former colonial port of Brunswick and the city of Wilmington to the Atlantic. Confederate forces constructed an earthen-work fort at the desolate point in 1861, with formidable coastal artillery batteries allowing Wilmington’s port to remain open until February 1865. Today, it happens to be a great spot for surf fishing and beachcombing. They say the best time to search the beach is right before low tide, just after a storm blows through. As luck would have it, those were the exact conditions I was headed toward at Federal Point with the Citizen Promaster JV3000 during the final days of summer.
