Opinion: Duluth schools need more than a successful referendum
Duluth Public Schools owes voters a convincing explanation of how another decade of operating levy revenue would produce lasting financial stability. Tuesday night’s referendum forum, co-sponsored by the Duluth News Tribune and Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce, made clear that further budget cuts would hurt students. It also reinforced why taxpayers deserve a fuller accounting of the decisions and expenses that brought the district to this point.

H/C netters down Hawks 6-1
HIBBING—When the high school tennis season started in August, Hibbing High School coach Gary Conda knew his young team needed time to grow. So far, so good for the Bluejackets. Hibbing has taken steps in the right direction, and the Bluejackets gained some valuable experience Monday with a 6-1 victory over Hermantown at the Lincoln Elementary School Courts. Hibbing won three singles matches and three doubles matches to get the win over the Hawks. “They’ve absolutely improved,” Conda said. “It’s been steady improvment. There’s been a couple that have been markedly better. “It’s a good thing to have teams that steadily improve like that. Hopefully, we can cause a little trouble at the end here.” Against Hermantown, Mya McKenny beat Alee Devlieger at first singles 7-5, 6-2; Lauren Ringhofer downed Nevie Homich at second singles 6-0, 6-2; and Mara McDonald beat Abby Grzybowski at third singles 6-4, 6-1. At fourth singles, the Hawks’ Clara Patullo beat Vivian Claugherty in three sets, 1-6, 6-2, 6-1. “I thought we battled hard in all of the singles,” Conda said. “Mya had to gut it out. She won a close first set, then closed it out in the second. She had to hit a

Bluejacket 11 back on track with lopsided win over Rails
HIBBING—After a disappointing one-point overtime loss to Esko last week, Hibbing High School football coach Matt Anderson needed to see how his team would respond against Proctor. Any doubts in Anderson’s mind were laid to rest early as the Bluejackets scored 28 points in the first quarter en route to a 61-0 victory over the Rails Friday at Cheever Field in Dr. Ben Owens Stadium. Hibbing was ready to put that Esko game behind it, and focus on Proctor. “On Saturday, our seniors were like, ‘We want to watch film,’” Anderson said. “We came in last Saturday and watched the whole game. “We rolled in on Monday and had a nice, intensful practice. The whole week just kept rolling. They set the tone early, and really did a good job.” The Bluejackets kicked off to the Rails and after a couple of penalties, Proctor was forced to punt. The snap was over the punters head. He picked up the ball and was tackled on the 1-yard line. On the next play, Hibbing was off and running as Elliot White found his way into the end zone to make it 7-0. The Rails fumbled on their next possession, and a few
