Evansville falls to Jefferson, giving Eagles a share of Rock Valley Conference Valley Division title

EVANSVILLE — Tyler Fredrick had three hits and drove in two runs as Jefferson’s baseball team beat host Evansville 5-1 on Monday to clinch a share of the Rock Valley Conference’s Valley Division title.

The top five hitters in the Eagles order combined for 11 of the team’s 13 hits. Aidan Kammer, winning pitcher Tyler Schroedl, Drew Peterson and Payton Heard contributed two hits each.

Kammer led off the game by doubling on a liner to left field, took third on a balk and scored on Fredrick’s line-shot single into center for the Eagles (16-5, 11-1 in conference).

Evansville (6-13, 5-8) tied it up in the second, when Michael Horgen drew a leadoff walk and scored on Corvin Klitzman’s one-out single.

Schroedl doubled to right with two outs in the third. His courtesy runner Cale Schmidt scored on an error in left field on a Peterson single. Fredrick added another RBI single in the fourth, plating Tyler Steinke. Bentley Wagner was called out trying to score from second on the play to end the inning with the Eagles ahead 3-1 before they added a pair in the sixth.

Schroedl pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing a run on four hits. He retired seven consecutive in the middle innings, including five via strikeout, and finished with six punchouts and three walks. An error in the outfield put two Evansville runners in scoring position with two outs in the sixth before Wagner entered and got Cordell Harris to ground out.

Evansville’s next game is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. Tuesday at Walworth Big Foot.
