HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – In response to a proposed settlement by CenterPoint Energy, the Citizens Action Coalition (CAC) calls the adjusted rate hikes “alarming”. Ben Inskeep with the CAC says it places too heavy a burden on customers.

“It’s going to be over a $35 a month bill increase for electric customers of CenterPoint,” says Inskeep, “and more than $50 a month bill increase for CenterPoint’s residential customers who are on their electric heating rate.”

CenterPoint previously proposed an 18% bill increase for customers. After public testimony earlier this year, CenterPoint has now proposed a drop in their increase, including a base rate increase of $11, down from their original increase proposal of $23.

CenterPoint reaches agreement on rate hike proposal

“It would feature a reduction in the fixed monthly charge component of the bill, but a very large increase in the variable component of the bill,” explains Inskeep. “In other words, the more electricity you use, the higher your bill becomes.”

In February, around 1,000 customers showed their opposition during public hearings with close to 80 giving their testimony in front of the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC). Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry was also in attendance during those hearings.

“I thought that was just really phenomenal that the community spoke, really loud and clear,” says Mayor Terry. “Our administration’s always going to be an advocate to ensure that we do as much as we can in terms of affordability for people, and I hope CenterPoint continues to keep that in mind in how we can support those most in need by providing relief and bill relief programs.”

Inskeep says it is too early to tell how the IURC will rule, but believes the strong opposition will work in their favor. “I think the commission is going to have to take notice because this is a very unprecedented case in terms of the magnitude of the rate increase that’s being requested, and in terms of the public outcry,” says Inskeep.

Several government agencies across Vanderburgh, Gibson, and Warrick counties also oppose the increase. One of those is Evansville City Council, who are interveners in this case. We asked for their reaction but declined to comment citing the ongoing case. Customers have until July 12 to submit written testimony to the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor.
