    University of Evansville celebrates 166th commencement ceremony

    HENDERSON, Ky (WEHT) – The University of Evansville bestowed 505 degrees upon 488 graduates during the 166th commencement ceremony on May 4.

    University officials state several awards were given at the ceremony including the Mabel Dillingham Nenneker and Guthrie May Outstanding Senior Award, the Outstanding Teacher Award and the Eykamp Prize. Additionally, two honorary degrees were featured during the celebration.

    2024 Mabel Dillingham Nenneker and Guthrie May Outstanding Senior Award – Crispin Ewen

    Officials state during her time at UE, Ewen spearheaded various initiatives to enhance student life, including safety upgrades, menstrual product accessibility and gathering student feedback for dining services.

    2024 Outstanding Teacher Award Recipient – Dr. Diana Rodriguez, Quevedo, Associate Professor of Spanish.

    Officials state Dr. Rodriguez Quevedo is a professor in the foreign language department and prioritizes student success. Officials say she helped implement online entry-level Spanish courses to meet evolving needs, and students boast about her innovated teaching methods that foster engaging learning environments. She also actively contributes to campus diversity and professional development initiatives beyond the classroom.

    2024 Eykamp Prize Recipient – Dr. Alan Kaiser, Professor of Archaeology

    Officials state Dr. Kaiser has elevated his department to national recognition, notably through its distinctive undergraduate program in classical archeology. Officials say under his guidance, students benefit from a well-rounded education integrating classical languages, history and technical skills, distinguishing them within the field. Officials also say his dedication to experiential learning shines through initiatives like the Tin City Archaeological Project, marking its 20th anniversary this year.

    Mrs. Rita Eykamp: Honorary Degree – Doctor of Humane Letters

    Officials state Mrs. Rita Eykamp’s impact at UE spans over three decades from role on the Board of Trustees, serving as chair and later full board member to her, to her leadership contributions in Evansville. Officials say her dedication has earned her prestigious awards and accolades, reflecting her commitment to both UE and the broader community.

    Hon. Richard L. Young: Honorary Degree – Doctor of Humane Letters

    Officials state the Honorable Richard L. Young roles spans from organizations like the Evansville Bar Association to dedication to mental health advocacy. Officials say the dedication of the UE Mental Health and Wellness Clinic and Emily M. Young Assessment Center in November 2023 stands as a lasting tribute to his commitment to mental health awareness and support.
