I-Team: Mailman robbed at gunpoint for mailbox keys

EUCLID , Ohio (WJW) — A U.S. postal carrier told police that two masked males, both with guns, robbed him Saturday afternoon while he was delivering mail on Sidney Drive in Euclid.

Police video released to the FOX 8 I-Team shows the victim talking to officers after the robbery. The victim said he did not get a good description of the suspects because they were wearing ski masks.

When officers asked the carrier if the suspects threatened him, he said they “pointed guns in my face.” The suspects ordered the carrier to hand over his postal keys. Once the suspects got the keys, they took off.

For the last couple of years, the FOX 8 I-Team has reported on postal carriers all over the area being robbed at gunpoint. In almost all of the cases, the suspects only wanted the mail carriers’ keys, which can be used to open the large blue mail boxes.

“This was completely brazen,” said Euclid Police Chief Scott Meyer. “This was at 1 p.m. on a Saturday, in the middle of the day. This was a postal worker going about his route and two individuals in ski masks rob him in full view of the neighborhood.”

An official with the U.S. Postal Inspection confirmed the armed robbery and released a statement.

“The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, along with the Euclid Police Department, are actively investigating this matter. Fortunately the carrier was unharmed,” the statement reads. “As we are still in the information gathering process and it is an active investigation, the Inspection Service cannot provide any other specifics at this time. Postal Inspectors are asking anyone with information about this incident to call them at 877-876-2455.  All information will be kept confidential.”

So far, no arrests have been made.
