    Cowgirl softball drops into third place

    The Crook County Cowgirls have dropped to third in the Tri-Valley Conference after a one-run loss to Estacada on Thursday.

    The Cowgirls played well enough to win, but gave up five errors as they fell 9-8 to the Estacada Rangers. Estacada moved past the Cowgirls into second place with an 8-4 league record, while the Cowgirls fell to a half game back with a 7-4 mark.

    The Cowgirls had defeated Estacada in the two team's previous meetings. However, Thursday the homestanding Rangers jumped on top with a run in the first and a second run in the second. Crook County scored a run in the third to pull to within a run before the Rangers exploded for five runs in the fourth. Estacada added an eighth run in the fifth to run their lead to 8-1.

    However, Crook County battled back, scoring a trio of runs in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh to tie the game at 8-8. Unfortunately for the Cowgirls, Estacada found a way to score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to take the key league win.

    The Cowgirls outhit the Rangers 13-10 including home runs from Adyson Ware, Jaycee Villastrigo, Kya Mozingo and Tylee Cossitt, along with a double from Cossitt. Ware went 3-for-4 at the plate while Jolene Bartolotti went 2-for-2 and both Cossitt and Kaylyn Fildes both went 2-for-4. Kendall Martinez and Danner Hemphill also each had singles for the Cowgirls. The Rangers also hit the ball hard with four doubles and two home runs in the contest.

    Villasstrigo started in the pitchers circle for the Cowgirls, giving up seven hits while striking out four and walking one, while giving up giving up seven runs, two of them earned. Raelynn Weaver threw the final two innings for Crook County, giving up three hits and two runs.

    Kassidy Elkins pitched six innings for the Rangers allowing 10 hits and five runs. She was replaced by Laney Briones after giving up a run with no outs in the top of the seventh inning. Briones gave up three more hits, and three runs before finally getting out of the inning for the Rangers.

    Estacada, which is 14-7 overall , closes out the regular season with home games against Gladstone and Madras, followed by a road game on Friday against the league-leading The Dalles Riverhawks.

    Meanwhile, Crook County, which is now 12-10 overall, hosts Madras, 3-7, 5-11, on Monday, travels to The Dalles, 12-0, 16-1, on Wednesday, then closes out the regular season with a double header against Molalla, 2-9, 5-15, on Friday. All games are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. except for game two of Friday's double header, which should start at approximately 6 p.m. The good news for Crook County is should they finish the regular season tied with Estacada the Cowgirls hold the tiebreaker as they are currently ninth in the OSAA power rankings, while Estacada is 14th.
