Kenwood High School Principal Carl Armstrong announced he will be stepping down from his position as of July 1.

The news comes after only one year as the school’s top administrator. Armstrong was named the principal in July 2023, replacing former Kenwood Principal Brian Powell.

In a May 10 letter addressing the families of Kenwood students, Armstrong expressed gratitude and said he thoroughly enjoyed his short stint as principal.

He also accentuated how much he valued the relationships he’s built with faculty, students and the campus community over the past year.

“Together, we have been partners in our mutual goal of continuing a tradition oof educational excellence at Kenwood High,” Armstrong wrote.

“As principal, I have always held much respect and appreciation for your unwavering dedication to your children, our school and the surrounding community.”

Prior to taking the reins at Kenwood, Armstrong was Parkville’s assistant principal and a Spanish teacher at Perry Hall High School.

“Through our partnership, we have built a solid foundation that I truly believe will ensure a smooth transition for the new principal of Kenwood High School,” Armstrong’s letter continues.

“On a personal note, saying goodbye will not be easy. I will never forget my time at Kenwood High School; so instead of saying goodbye, I will simply thank you for the support, partnership and memories.

“I wish you all the very best and hope that every student enrolled at Kenwood High continues to enjoy the exciting opportunities that our amazing school provides.”

Creed Reed, the executive director of BCPS’s East Zone, confirmed Armstrong’s resignation in a letter to Kenwood parents, guardians and staff members.

Similar to Armstrong, Reed’s letter was written Friday and distributed on Monday afternoon. He announced that BCPS officials will begin to search for a replacement and the factors that are involved in the principal selection process.

According to Reed, Kenwood parents have the option of completing a survey allowing them to indicate the qualities and leadership skills they want to see in the school’s next principal.

On Thursday, there will be separate meetings scheduled for parents and Kenwood staff members, Reed’s letter says, adding that job candidates will be interviewed through a virtual platform.

Following the interview and screening process, BCPS Superintendent Myriam Rogers will make a recommendation to the board of education and the campus community will be notified when the BOE officially appoints a new principal.

“We want to assure you that we will work in collaboration to ensure that the principal candidate that is recommended will continue to support your students, staff and parents in an excellent manner,” Reed wrote.

“I look forward to receiving your input and thank you for your continued support of Kenwood High School.”
