    Maroon tracksters put on strong showing in Escanaba

    ESCANABA — Nine first-place finishes highlighted a strong showing by the Menominee track team in Escanaba on Tuesday.

    Menominee shined in both the track and field events, with the Maroon girls finishing in the top-five in 14 out of 16 total events, while the Maroon boys had a top-five finish in all 16.

    The Maroon boys finished second overall in the team scores with 42 points, well behind first-place Kingsford (103) but well ahead of third-place Escanaba, who finished with 27 points.

    Esky rebounded on the girls’ side with 66 points, good for first place. Kingsford finished second with 55, while Menominee was close behind in third with 53.

    Winley Brandt set the tone for the Maroon girls by winning the 1,600-meter run in 6:04.36 before capturing the top spot in the 3,2000-meter run with a time of 14:10.63.

    Lexi Marineau breezed past Escanaba’s Mara Liss to win the 100-meter hurdles in 18.18 seconds but Liss got her revenge in the 300-meter hurdles with a first-place time of 58.50, while Marineau settled for second at 59.95.

    Gianna Coduti continued the Lady Maroons’ hot streak by cruising to first place in the 400-meter dash (1:07.99), more than two seconds faster than runner-up Irene Neumeier of Escanaba (1:10.12).

    Coduti and Marineau teamed with Erin Schuettpeltz and Emily Schuettpeltz to collect first place in the 1,600m relay (4:32.59). Mackenzi Pesola replaced Marineau in the 800m relay, as Menominee finished second with a time of 1:56.19.

    Emily Schuettpeltz edged Erin by two inches to finish second in the high jump, with Emily recording a height of four feet, eight inches, while Emily lept to 4’ 6”.

    Marineau, Pesola, Erin Schuettpeltz and Richele Milostan placed second overall in the 400m relay in 56.05 seconds.

    Pesola also finished third in the 100-meter dash (13.98) before winning the long jump with a leap of 12’ 11”.

    Meanwhile, Brandt, along with Cortney Buscher, Anna Axtell and Pashunce Shepard, took second in the 3,200m relay after crossing the finish line in 12:25.58.

    Erika Peterson took second place in the shot put after tallying a toss of 29’ 0.

    On the boys’ side, Menominee received a pair of first-place finishes from Nathan Komp and Darrent Butler, with Komp sprinting to victory in the 400m dash (54.55), while Butler soared to the top of the high jump standings (5’ 10”).

    Brayden Bourion nabbed second place in the 1,600m after finishing with a sub-five minute time of 4:55.36, just a few steps behind Blake Tomasoki of Kingsford, who won the race in 4:55.36.

    Bourion paired with Komp, Jackson Myszak and Maverick Geniesse to win the 1,600m relay in 3:55.20.

    Brennan Swanson heaved his way to third place in the discus with a throw measuring 90’ 1”.

    Zander Jurkiewicz finished second in the 110m hurdles with a time of 20.06 seconds.
