District 10 lacrosse: Who are the region champions, postseason favorites?

How would Cathedral Prep and McDowell close the District 10 boys’ lacrosse regular season?

    Dramatically, of course.

The crosstown rivals met Friday at Dollinger Field. After 40 of 48 minutes bled off the clock, they were tied at five.

Nate Klan and Alex Little scored late for Prep, overcoming McDowell’s second-half comeback. Klan and Andrew Timon each scored twice in a 7-5 Prep victory, avenging the Ramblers’ loss at McDowell earlier this spring.

“The last time we played (McDowell), it didn’t go how we wanted,” said Timon, a junior defender. “We just couldn’t pass and catch, and a lot of our guys were hurt, but now we’re back, and I give credit to McDowell. I think the first time we kind of took them for granted and they came out ready to play.”

    Deciding a jumbled region

Equally satisfying for the Ramblers was that Friday’s victory prevented McDowell from sharing this year’s D-10 Region 1 championship with them and Meadville.

Prep and McDowell both split two meetings with Meadville. McDowell’s loss to Hickory sank the Trojans to 5-3 in the league, however, while Prep and Meadville both swept Hickory to finish 6-2.

That’ll make for an interesting D-10 Class 2A playoff field alongside Fairview while McDowell awaits a PIAA Class 3A sub-regional.

“At the start of the season, a lot of us were hurt and we couldn’t even pass the ball around a couple times,” said Tanner Ball, a senior goalie. “We’ve gone leaps and bounds forward.”

No need for drama in this one.

The McDowell girls dominated the second leg of their season series with Prep on Thursday, racing to an 11-2 victory which looked much different than their 10-8 triumph over the Ramblers on April 26.

Emma Crowers and Desylia Greer each scored three goals for McDowell, which never looked back after opening with five unanswered goals.

“We work as a team and a unit really well together,” said senior defender Eryn McFadden. “As the season progressed, we really learned how to work together and be one.”

McDowell finished 7-1 against D-10 opponents, its only loss to Conneaut, with which it split two games. That makes the Trojans repeat Region 1 champions.

“I think our sideline is the best in our district,” said Reese Ranus, a sophomore attacker. “They’re like the 13th player on the field and I really think they impact it a lot.”

    Trojans await PIAA tournament

The only Class 3A team in D-10, McDowell will forego the district playoffs and await the District 7 champion in the PIAA tournament.

Conneaut will be favored to repeat in D-10 Class 2A after a perfect regular season against the rest of the field.

“We have a super young team with a lot of first-year players,” Ranus said. “I think we work really well together and have a super strong bond, more than any team I’ve ever been on. I think that’s what helps us play together so well.”
