Going fishing in Lake Erie? New fish cleaning station open at Lampe Marina in east Erie

Now you have another place to put those fish guts. A new fish cleaning station is open at Lampe Marina for fishermen and women, 24 hours a day, through Oct. 31.

"This is a big day for all the fishermen in Erie, Pennsylvania," said Jerry Skrypzak, president of the S.O.N.S. of Lake Erie. "This was constructed, for them, to clean their fish and dispose of all their waste."

The tables, one handicapped accessible, feature water, electricity, drains and a cooler nearby to dispose of waste. Three more cleaning tables are planned for the Lampe location at the foot of Port Access Road.

The project was paid for with funds raised from a special Lake Erie access stamp, added to the state fish license required of anglers who fish Lake Erie. It is the third fish cleaning station, in addition to stations in North East Township and Walnut Creek in Fairview Township.

Tony Pianta, Harbormaster for the Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority, said the fish waste would be picked up regularly by a Wisconsin company and eventually used for fertilizer.

"This station is an amenity for those who use the Lake Erie fisheries," said Pianta. "Not just boaters here at Lampe Marina, but anyone who fishes and needs to clean their catch."
