An Escambia County man killed himself Friday after a standoff with SWAT during an alleged armed burglary.

The Escambia County Sheriff's Office responded to the 1100 block of West Hope Drive to an armed disturbance call saying 43-year-old Connie Bonner Jr. had broken into someone's house through a window while carrying an assault rifle.

"Bonner attacked the victim after entering the home, but the victim managed to escape unharmed," an ECSO release says. "Bonner then barricaded himself inside the house and threatened to harm himself and deputies."

The ECSO noted that Bonner had been previously arrested in 2023 for domestic violence strangulation and domestic violence false imprisonment with the same victim.

Escambia County Sheriff's Office SWAT, Hostage Negotiations and Drone units were called in to assist with the situation. While ECSO awaited a judge's signature on a warrant affidavit to charge Bonner with armed burglary, domestic violence battery and criminal mischief, Bonner stopped responding to law enforcement.

The SWAT team then entered the home and discovered Bonner in a bedroom with a fatal, self-inflicted gunshot wound.

    No further information was released.
