ENGLEWOOD — An 80-year-old North Port motorist died Wednesday after she attempted a U-turn and drove in front of another motorist in Englewood, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The woman was driving a sedan south on Pine Street in the right lane, just south of 5th Street after 1 p.m. She attempted to make a U-turn from that lane, driving in front of a vehicle being driven in the same direction in the left lane, according to the FHP report.

The vehicle in the left lane, an SUV, hit the woman's vehicle on the driver's side, critically injuring her. She was taken to a hospital but died later, the report stated.

That woman's passenger, a 93-year-old North Port man, sustained serious injuries. The driver of the left-laned vehicle, a 61-year-old Englewood man, suffered minor injuries.

The crash is still under investigation.
