ENFIELD, N.C. (WNCN) — A man is wanted for using fake money to buy electronics during an online meet-up with a seller, the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.

Investigators said 26-year-old Tariq Powell has been wanted the past several weeks for obtaining property by false pretense and forgery of an endorsement.

On March 26, deputies said they received a report that a victim met with Powell in the Enfield area to sell some electronics after communicating with him on a social media platform.

After Powell left with the items, they said the victim realized he was given counterfeit U.S. currency during the transaction.

Powell is from Murfreesboro in Hertford County, N.C., according to the sheriff’s office.

However, deputies said he is likely in the Roanoke Rapids area and could be in other areas as well.

According to investigators, Powell drives a gray in color Mitsubishi Outlander SUV.

Anyone who knows of Powell’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, or submit a tip through Halifax County Crime Stoppers .
