HONOLULU (KHON) — A Maui firefighter will be honored at a national event that pays tribute to firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Tre Evans-Dumaran, 24, was swept into a storm drain and carried out to sea when responding to flooding in January 2023.

Evans-Dumaran is among 226 firefighters being commemorated at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Park in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The ceremony will serve as a solemn remembrance of their bravery and dedication.

Representing Tre’s family and friends at the event will be a retired Maui firefighter, Greg Jenkins.

Reflecting on Evans-Dumaran’s character, Jenkins said, “He was always striving to do good by people, and he was just thrilled to be able to become a firefighter. He’s exactly the type of person that you’d want to see fill your shoes when you retire.”

Jenkins praised Evans-Dumaran’s outgoing and happy demeanor, highlighting his excellence as a firefighter. “He excelled in his recruit class, he excelled on his crew. And when he got asked to do things to support our community and keep it safe, he rose to the call every time… even that day,” said Jenkins.

Evans-Dumaran’s name will be engraved on the National Fallen Firefighters Monument, a stone sculpture listing the names of firefighters who have died in the line of duty since 1981.
