Organizations enter area food share challenge
Area businesses and organizations began challenging each other last week to acquire 3,100 pounds of food for the Waseca Area Food Shelf across the 31 days of March, which has been recognized since 1980 as “National Nutrition Month.” Since 1983, Minnesota’s GMCC organization has also named it “FoodShare Month.”
A life-long interest
Jessica Barens, a substitute teacher at the Waseca High School, has loaned a number of items to the Barbie displays now available for viewing at the county historical society. A particularly special set of memories is attached to a “Barbie Mansion" which her grandfather, Mark Barens, designed for her when she was nine years old. Currently, the Barbie Mansion is on display at the Waseca County Historical Society as part of the Barbie exhibit running from now until April.
Mankato Hails Young Artists at City Council for Arbor Day Poster Contest Triumphs
The City of Mankato has crowned the champions of creativity and environmental stewardship, saluting a group of young artists for their Arbor Day-inspired works. During the City Council meeting yesterday, the honored participants of the Mankato Arbor Day Poster Contest were bestowed with certificates and City packs, commending their contributions to raising awareness about the importance of trees.

Before rain moves in by Wednesday, we will spend today with pleasant conditions. We are looking at plentiful sunshine despite some haze above our heads to to lingering wildfire smoke. The good news is, air quality here at the surface should remain good to moderate. This means only those who are extra sensitive to smoke/wildfire smoke should limit their time outside. Those that aren’t extra sensitive can go about their day as normal. This afternoon will be beautiful with a light breeze up to 15 mph and highs hovering in the mid-70s. Tonight will become partly cloudy as temperatures dip into the upper-40s and low-50s by Wednesday morning.

Sexton honored with ‘Book of Golden Deeds’
Wasecan Tom Sexton says he is grateful and flattered that the Waseca Area Exchange Club honored him with its annual “Book of Golden Deeds” award this past January. Among other accomplishments, the award acknowledges his work planning and coordinating Waseca’s 2023 LakeFest celebration, so before saying anything else, he made it clear the summer festival came about because of contributions and input from many community members. Sexton is enthusiastic about attributing the success of last year’s event to the personalities, skills and resources contributed by others.
Waseca area caregivers receive grant
Last month (January) the Minnesota River Area Agency on Aging, Inc. (MNRAAA) has awarded Waseca Area Caregiver Services (WACS) a $61,926 Title III E grant and a $81,928 Title B grant. The awards are funded under Title III of the Older Americans Act (OAA) and the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

TIF hearing set for $1.6 million project
The Waseca City Council set a public hearing at a date to be determined on the proposed establishment and adoption of a “tax increment financing” (TIF) plan for an intended project on the “marketplace” property--the area of land east of the intermediate school and between the junior/senior high school and Walmart. The Waseca Real Estate Fund is looking to construct a 36-unit residential family housing development on the western half of the site. Sonnenberg said the project would not move forward without the reduction in property taxes offered through the TIF financing.
Notebook: Coaches ask to move softball finals to U of M
The Minnesota State High School League last year went along with a request from softball coaches to extend the state tournament to three days. The first edition of the expanded tournament will be next month at Caswell Park in North Mankato. A new request might require a little more persuasion. The permanent closure of the Janesville Clinic has left questions about the building unanswered, as Mayo Clinic remains without plans. Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton (JWP) Public Schools on the other hand is looking to turn the building into a school-based health clinic. St. Peter Police looking to implement body cams
By the beginning of 2025, the St. Peter Police Department is aiming to equip its officers with body worn cameras. During an annual report to the St. Peter City Council on Monday, May 6, Police Chief Matt Grochow announced that department was currently in the process of reviewing cost estimates to provide each of its officers with body worn cameras. Seneca Foods Corporation in Montgomery has been issued a citation by the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (MNDLI) and issued a penalty of $156,259 in regards to the incident which happened in the early morning hours of October 5, 2023, where 58-year-old worker Jose Luis Alvarado had items in a warehouse fall on top of him and he died from his injuries.
