Shenandoah council hears concerns over 'Fremont Buried Channel Aquifer' project
(Shenandoah) -- Preliminary plans from the city of Shenandoah to tap into a buried channel aquifer in Fremont County faced opposition Tuesday night. Meeting in regular session, the Shenandoah City Council heard feedback from residents and impacted property owners during a public hearing regarding the potential land purchase of five to 10 acres roughly six miles west of town for the Fremont Buried Channel Aquifer project. The hearing is a state requirement when considering the purchase of actively farmed agricultural land, with the proposed project calling for drilling at least two wells into the aquifer near 190th Street and 355th Avenue. Joe Gutschenritter is one of three landowners notified by the city that portions of his farmland are being looked at for the project. Gutschenritter says one of his main concerns is how installing the wells would impact any irrigation of the active farmland around the area.
